Civil Rights Movement TWEETS So many events in the Civil Rights Movement – imagine if you were present at all of them! How would you communicate the basic information of each major event quickly and concisely? Well, if we could send some technology back in time, maybe you could “tweet” your way through the Movement.
In this activity, you will report about various events, people, and organizations using Twitter as a model. In case you don’t know, Twitter is a social networking site that allows people to keep up with each other by posting messages of “tweets” that are no more than 140 characters in length. Over the next few days, you will use Chapter 29 and ABC-CLIO to post “tweets” about the events, individuals, and ideas listed below. This will serve as your Civil Rights Era study guide! Cut and paste the material below into a new page on your Unit 8 Online Notebook, and tweet away. Make sure your tweets are comlpete and cover a great deal about the topic ... but are limited in size! Don't worry too much - 140 is just a ballpark figure.
EXAMPLE TWEET – Why was Brown v. Board important? Tweet –Plessey overturned by SC, separate is not equal, schools must desegregate “with all deliberate speed”, should lead 2 more – bye bye Jim Crow? Will be some opposition! (that’s 138 characters … and a pretty complete tweet!)
Section 1 – Origins of the Civil Rights Movement What "changes" were making the efforts of African Americans more successful than ever? Tweet – People trying 2 fight 4 rights, look at Rosa Parks making a stand. Fighting 2 vote heading 2 Mississippi, don`t care about punishment.
What happened in Montgomery in 1955, and what were the results of this protest? Tweet –Rosa Parks making a stand on a bus, won`t move for a white man, put in jail- MLK helping the protest becomes a somebody.
What happened in Little Rock in 1957, and what were the results of this event? Tweet –Little Rock for integration, kids angry and start to protest. Mayor joins the fight orders national guards- soldiers come stop the mob, black kids go 2 school.
What happened in Greensboro in 1960, and what were the results of this event? Tweet –4 kids sit at Woolworth, not served and stay all day. protest starts- spreads all over the US, many people part of it. Woolworth gives in and other places. Provide a tweet describing SNCC Tweet –SNCC helped the protesting against and was created becuase of the Woolworth place- started at University in Raleigh in 1960 spread across US.

What happened on the Freedom Rides? Tweet – People got together to get inter-state equal- whites and blacks get in bus go around give speeches-got what they wanted.
What was the story and impact of the Birmingham Protests in 1963? Tweet –Many Protested, MLK was involved, many student involved with many arrested- police show violence- many people impacted, the end of Alabama's segregation laws.
Describe the March on Washington, including the impact. Tweet – Many march to D.C. for national desegregation of schools, and to demand a higher minimum wage- 200,000 people march, MLK says "I Have A Dream" speech- Gov start to help. What was the deal with the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Tweet – Talks about discrimination, mostly voting rights and segregation- it helped African American become equal and protected by the government, big marker. What was Freedom Summer? Tweet –Groups got together to help expand voter registration drive and when whites want apart they say no till they are let in. Tweet about the Voting Rights Act of 1965 Tweet – Johnson liked it, law focused on voting rights of all Americans, no states could overturn it. Voting went up for African American and helped many become more equal. Provide a tweet describing the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965. Tweet – Three Marches, MLK was leader did not get far because of police stopping them with violence- propose was to protested the segregation in Alabama- it worked and law made.
